Sleeping on the Job

Posted in Uncategorized on February 8, 2010 by Andy

This is the link to the picture.
You may have to refresh a couple times ;D.
In my opinion, this picture was posted in an attempt to humiliate or have fun with the public. Then again, the picture could also have been taken in the sense that the public should not allow this kind of slacking. You decide. ‘Give me a break, does it really look like he is dying or sick? He is clearly sleeping on the job n thats not acceptable, period!!!’ was one of the responses in the comments section below. Obviously the public reacted in a negative way. The people have the right to be mad because they’re paying money so they can get somewhere and this guy, is sleeping when they’re taking the time to pay to get somewhere.

Christmas Holidays`;.~

Posted in Rapid Writes on December 16, 2009 by Andy

I am so excited! This year’s Christmas is going to be full of joy! I enjoy bringing joy to our guests and all that fun stuff we get to do. Every year, we have some guests over for dinner and we talk for hours on end. For the kids we play games for hours on end :) . This time, I feel something different about my holiday. Not that fact that we’re going to have twice the amount of guests we had last year, it’s about people less fortunate then us. I went to Church last week and the message was about spreading the holiday joy. People from our church, like my age were on this program thingy and they were out on the streets for an evening to see how people were like during harsh winter days when we were just in the comfort of our homes. Some people shared there experience out on the streets. They were saying how like, they walked past wealthy restaurants and the people in there didn’t seem to realize how lucky they were. I feel the need to think about the people out there on Christmas. The people that feel that Christmas brings bad fortune because the weather is just hard to cope with and people walk past them without a heart for them. The Salvation Army put up a commercial about a mom and her kid standing on the front of a store. They look like ghosts to everyone and they look sad as people walk pass them. A way I feel I kind of helped already was in the family our class was sponsoring. I believe we can help their Christmas be less miserable and turn that into a happy merry Christmas. I come from a Christian family so I can kind of relate to those people and I feel bad for them. Of course I’m excited for the festive activities going on during the holidays, but I will pray for those that need help. Have a merry Christmas!;.~              Happy Holidays!

They really should.

I think they should include snowball fighting in the Olympics. They have that sport where you just lie down on something and go really fast. I THINK it’s called luge or yeah. Pretty boring and not to mention useless. If they include a sport like that, they should allow snowball fighting. It’d be like you have a team and you try to eliminate the other team. If you get hit, you’re out for the round or something like that. They’d be like matrix dodge in the game. People would be soooo competitive. I bet people would also like this sport. I mean, who doesn’t want to see people throw things at each other. The picture it paints in my mind is like a paint balling game. :) There aren’t many reason they shouldn’t make snowball fighting a sport because, it’s not very dangerous. It’s just snow and you will probably have gear on while playing. Also, you might say it’s like a bad influence on children. I say otherwise because it’s not bad. We all throw snow at one point in our lives and it’s fun. Making it all safe and wimpy would destroy the purpose of the Winter Olympics. To have fun is the purpose. I believe that the winter is a wonderful season and people should be able to enjoy however way the want it to. Snowball fighting is what the Winter Olympics need to create that holiday feeling for little kids that love to play with snow.

I never thought that elementary school would be so important. My marks were usually average which didn’t concern me at all. I never studied for tests and I almost never ever, brought home any homework. Until last year when I got my final report card which was a big surprise to me. My Language Arts and Math marks had dropped significantly. My parents enrolled me in a math program and urged me to read more to enhance my mark in Language Arts. My self esteem was at an all time low. I didn’t read or do my Kumon work. My sister wanted me to do well in school and in high school so she tried to get me to do my homework but I usually didn’t. My peers are definitely a big impact on my learning and will help me do well in school. Three things that are essential to get me through high school. Only at the beginning of grade 8, did I start seeing the importance of school.

My family helped me a lot on the way to high school. My sister, Fiona just left to her first year at Western University. Before she left, she told me that high school was the hardest thing thing she had ever done, and if I wasn’t prepared, I’d fail. This was before grade 8 so it didn’t occur for me to do something about it. Now that I have started grade 8, I’m seeing the transition into high school I didn’t see before. My parents encouraged me to do we in school but will never be able to help me the way my sister did. When ever I needed help with understanding a concept, she would be able to teach it to me.

I know high school’s a really big step. My friends and those around me are helping me take that big step into high school. When I found out the grade 8′s would be choosing our courses for high school after Christmas, I was very excited but shocked at the same time. It was a wake up call for me. Learning with my friends does kind of help me because it’s a lot more fun. I don’t work as effective without motivation as when I have motivation.

I was enrolled in Kumon the summer of ’08. It’s an extra curricular program that gives you extra math or English homework after school. I was getting extra math work. To improve my English mark, I was encouraged to read and write more after school. I procrastinated and I didn’t do my Kumon or because I wasn’t motivated and I thought it was too easy. After school, I didn’t read or write at home because it was too boring. Now I wish I focused more on Kumon so I could have gotten more out of it. Yes, it did improve my math mark tremendously, but I could’ve enhanced my learning a lot more. My parents want to get me a tutor for the upcoming years. I’ve talked with some friends that are in grade 9 and they’re telling me that it’s crazy hard and Earl’s curriculum is insane.

I’m setting a goal for grade 8. I really need to participate more and I need to strive to improve my Language Arts mark and my English skills since it’s I’m not very good at it and it’s harder to learn English skills than learning math. I will work harder, and improve my work initiative to be successful in high school.

Change the curriculum!

Posted in Rapid Writes on December 12, 2009 by Andy

Dear Mrs. Smith,
I believe that you should change the amount of Language Arts period we get a week and convert those into Music periods. I don’t feel like we get enough Music periods. Music is my second or third favourite subject. Math being first, and Gym and Music tied. We only get two music periods a week. Last period on Wednesday and second on Thursday. On Monday and Tuesday, I hate waiting for Music on Wednesday. Then, when it finally comes, it passes way too quickly. Before you know it, it’s Friday and you have to wait till Monday. Then it just repeats. Music is supposed to stretch your brains further and make you unique and smarter. ‘Mozart makes you smarter’. I believe that it makes you more smarter. Maybe like, more unique. If you decide to put more music blocks, there will be a lot more energy in our school. Like more concerts, more happiness flowing around. Therefore, I conclude that you should take out 1 or 2 Language Arts periods and replace those with Music blocks.

Bandddd

Posted in Rapid Writes on December 12, 2009 by Andy

Thursday night I arrive at W. Erskine Johnston Public School at 6:43. I am a rebel in music class because I am not in band. I have rebelled ever since I started music class. That is, September of 08. Anyways, I went to see the band concert on Thursday. I was hoping to see friends from my 7/8 split last year. Sadly, only Shehryar showed up. We were walking in the hall waiting for the concert to start. We went to the bake sale and saw Ryan there and we said hi. When the concert started Shehryar and I were late to get seats. Full house that night soo we just stood there. Junior band was interesting to watch. We were comparing them to us last year. It was funny haha. The playlist was : Holiday Fantasy, Little Drummer Boy, and a new piece called Energico. After the junior band ended there performance, the Jazz band started up. I don’t know the name of the first song but it was AWESOME. Broadway something and James was featured in it. :) His solo was awesome and got a big applause. Second song had another solo by Talmadge. It’s called ‘As I Look At You’. Sounds cheesy doesn’t it? Last but not least, they played El Tigre. Personal favourite for me. A big round of applause for the band members and Mrs. Cooke at the end. At the intermission, the bake sale was FLOODED. It was crazy. The food there was pure sugar and I could see dozens of kids running around in the bake sale. Senior band started playing after the intermission. I forget the songs they played but one was Best of Queen. I love that one. I’ve heard it so many times when I was little and now in music class, I’m actually good enough to play it. After all that, my parents arrived on time to pick me up. That concert was definitely worth driving to in the snow.

UNICORNS ARE REAL?!

Posted in Rapid Writes on December 12, 2009 by Andy

k, no I don’t want a unicorn. I don’t want a weird (mystical) animal for a pet. An animal with parts of several animals is just weird. I wish I had a dog because they’re loyal, fun to play with, and can be trained to not demolish ones house over time. Dogs are cool and are said to be a ‘mans best friend’. A lot of family friends have dogs. My piano teacher has a dog. They’re fun to play with. You can run around with them, play catch, do loads of things with them. My dad used to have a dog, I forget what kind but he used to really love his dog. They aren’t that hard to maintain. They can be trained to not do there business in the house. I can walk them early in the morning. In the summer, my sister and I can take turns walking the dog. On the weekdays, I’m not allowed to play games on the computer. A pet as energetic as a dog would be an awesome companion to have on the weekdays when I’m just super bored. I wouldn’t want a cat because I’m allergic to them. I just get very sleepy/sick when I get near them. ): I do like cats though. Sooo, I want a dog for a pet!

Snow Day

Posted in Rapid Writes on December 12, 2009 by Andy

On Wednesday, I woke up to see a blizzard outside my window. I got ready for school but as I walked out the door, my neighbor said to me that the buses were canceled. I was disappointed because I actually wanted to go to school. If I stayed home, what would there be to do? I wouldn’t be allowed on the computer and I don’t have any gaming consoles like the 360 or a ps3.. so I asked my dad to drive me to school. I got to school pretty early so I went inside. Some friends tagged along with me. I put my backpack into my locker and took my jacket off. Then teachers kicked us out. I asked to go to my locker to fetch my jacket.. but I had to go outside. ): I was freezinggggg. It was soo cold, it’s not even funny. After a while I was just numb to it. I was surprised to see that 30 or so grade 8′s showed up to school. I was expecting like no one to come. Our classes combined and we couldn’t find out what our schedule was because it kept changing due to teachers not being available. Our first period was Language Arts. We were in Mrs. Holvey’s class. No one saw it coming. We had to read the whole period. Everyone thought it’d be a ‘Fun Day’ but I guess not. We had French second period. It was okay I guess. Then it was Nutrition Break and eventually recess. Tim and I stayed in for Design and Tech. Our project is going to definitely get a 4 (I hope). We’re building this crane thingy that picks up stuff. People started pouring in after the bell went. It was a productive recess for me and Tim. Our third period was computers with Mr. Turnbull. We were doing game that had a map without the names on them. We had to drag the correct name on to the map. After we watched funny math videos. :) I enjoyed fourth period the most. Music class is always a fun thing to do. We got to do Jazz music which was really fun. Then Nutrition Break and recess. Same old routine. After all that we had our Phys Ed block. We played volleyball and we actually got to do a game. Since there were a lot more people then we usually have, the games were really crowded and I barely got to touch the ball. In our class, we have like 25/26? On that day we had about 35 students. The last block of the day was LA. We returned to Mrs. Holvey’s homeroom and we read or did work for the last 50 minutes of the day. I love snow days?
